The new characters are the adult versions of the main characters of the Digimon Adventure 02 anime, as well as their partner Digimon. Digimon Adventure 02 aired for 50 episodes in 2000 to 2001. The voice actors for the Digimon are reprising their roles. Toei teases the film as "Taichi and Agumon's final adventure. " The taglines on the teaser visual below read, "We will always be together, " and, "We walk together with Digimon, toward all the 'children. '" Tomohisa Taguchi (four-part Persona 3 the Movie film series, Kino's Journey - The Beautiful World, Twin Star Exorcists) is directing the film at Yumeta Company. It’s easy to understand why people are unhappy about Psi and Toei’s continued reliance on the Adventure franchise. But once again, it comes back to a steadfast rule that’s proven itself time and time again, all the way back to the ending of Zero Two: There is insufficient appetite in the fandom for any anime that isn’t Adventure. That’s the facts. We complained about Tamers veering away from Adventure. We complained about Frontier, Savers, and Xros Wars being too different. We didn’t turn out for Appmon. Tri. and Kizuna? We showed up in droves. You personally may not like it, but Digimon fans as a whole latched onto Adventure, so Adventure is what we get. This is really only a problem if they insist on sticking to the same timeline. If it’s a full reboot, set in the modern day? Now we have something! So here’s three points that will maybe help reassure everybody that this is probably the right move. 1) We aren’t sick of the characters. We’re sick of the canon. By now, everything is laid out in front of us. We know almost all of the key events between 1999 and 2005, we know who the original Chosen were, we know Kizuna will explain 2011 and we know how they all end up in 2028. There isn’t enough left to explore with this timeline. But resetting everything? These are still the characters we know and love, but freeing them from their established history, setting them in the modern day and giving them modern day problems to solve could be a breath of fresh air. They can make adjustments to histories or backstories, and choose whether or not to have the characters tackle and react to them. They can take a whole new development path, or reimagine the existing ones. That damned confining epilogue? In a rebooted series, it is gone! And it doesn’t take anything away from what already exists. Like Menoa says in the Kizuna trailer, Chosen are powered by possiblities. Now they have possibilities again. 2) A modern day setting is full of opportunities, and the Adventure cast supports that. Really, all that would remain are the characters. Think of it as an original series where we already know the cast. Now imagine what a new Digimon series in 2020 could do: Getting an Adventure spin on modern technology problems without dialing back to 2005 or 2011? Doable. Random cameos from other series? Why not! Throw in Ruki and Renamon for no reason; there’s no canon anymore! LGBTQ representation? Now there’s a chance! If they get it on the air early enough, you know what’s also in Odaiba this August? The Olympics! The World Tour comes to them! Appmon in an Adventure reboot? Why the hell not? Can you imagine what a reinvisioned Digital World 2020 could even *look* like? Don’t be scared away just because we already know the cast! There are so many things they can do now! 3) If it draws more of us than Appmon did, they win. Ideally, this will be mainly targeted to a new audience. If the 1999 versions of the characters found a home with us, the 2020 versions can find a home with our kids. The thing to understand about reboots is they’re intended for a newer audience. There will be crossover from the existing crowd, and undoubtedly many will enjoy it, but it’s not for them. You don’t have to like or follow it; you can be perfectly content with what you’ve got, using Kizuna as a nice sendoff. Maybe Appmon needed more support from us to succeed, but it wasn’t nor should it have been entirely reliant on us. But if more of us support Adventure, and both history and the fact a preview for this is being shown in American theaters filled with Digimon fans suggests it will, it’s going to do fine. I can’t discourage cynicism, and there’s every possibility this will be as tiresome and uninspired as some think. But none of the recent Digimon entries were tiresome and uninspired, and the success of them, either creatively and/or financially, suggests that maybe Toei knows what they’re doing after all.
